Share:In an exclusive column for Caughtoffside, football analyst Fabrizio Romano sheds light on the current state of affairs surrounding Frenkie de Jong’s contract negotiations with Barcelona. Despite widespread speculation.
Romano suggests that the Catalan giants might encounter challenges in swiftly finalizing a new deal for the Dutch midfielder, primarily due to concerns related to Financial Fair Play regulations.
“Frenkie de Jong – Despite reports, my understanding is that there is nothing happening right now on a new contract for Frenkie de Jong,” Romano said.
“His contract will be a topic for Barcelona in the next months but it’s not something imminent, Barca have to fix different situations with Financial Fair Play first, so it’s going to take some time.”
Barcelona’s financial struggles have been well-documented in recent years, significantly impacting their flexibility in the transfer market. Consequently, the club must exercise caution when managing the wages of key players, including De Jong.
De Jong, a pivotal figure in Xavi’s squad, remains an indispensable asset to Barcelona. However, securing his services for an extended period may not come without its financial hurdles. It’s likely that De Jong, considering his contributions, would seek a substantial contract extension.
Notably, Frenkie De Jong was recently in action for the Dutch national team during the international break, further emphasizing his importance on both the domestic and international fronts.
