Iran have overall particiapted in seven World Cups. If they withdraw from the tournament, Iraq or UAE are considered the most likely candidates based on AFC qualifying rankings.

For the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage, the Iranian national team has been drawn into Group G, where they will play three matches across the United States:
June 15 vs New Zealand – 9:00 PM ET / 6:00 PM local (SoFi Stadium, Inglewood)
June 21 vs Belgium – 3:00 PM ET / 12:00 PM local (SoFi Stadium, Inglewood)
June 26 vs Egypt – 11:00 PM ET / 8:00 PM local (Lumen Field, Seattle)
