The 25-year-old was on the ball during last Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final first leg against Sevilla at Old Trafford, before abruptly collapsing in pain.
Though initial fears suggested a ruptured Achilles, medical assessments later confirmed that the Dutch international had sustained a fractured metatarsal, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.
Martinez, formerly of Ajax, is now targeting a full return to fitness during pre-season, ahead of the 2023-24 campaign. In a social media post on Monday night, the defender shared a photo of himself in a hospital bed, sporting a cheerful smile and expressing his gratitude to fans for their support. He wrote: “Everything went really well, thanks to God! Many thanks for all of your messages. Now focusing on the recovery.”

Despite the setback, Martinez can look back on a positive debut season in England, having featured in 45 appearances across all tournaments under Erik ten Hag. The Argentine-born defender also scored one goal and played a crucial role in Manchester United’s recent EFL Cup triumph.
