Manchester City, reigning champions of the English Premier League, initiated discussions with their domestic rivals at the onset of June, strategically aligning their approach with Kovacic’s international duties. With the imminent departure of Ilkay Gundogan, who recently completed a remarkable season as club captain, the arrival of Kovacic is widely perceived as his successor in the midfield.
Kovacic’s football journey has seen him traverse various clubs, including a noteworthy loan spell at Chelsea from Real Madrid during the 2018-2019 season. Despite facing a two-transfer-window ban, Chelsea deemed Kovacic’s contributions invaluable and secured his services on a permanent basis, making him their sole sanctioned acquisition during that period.
