Newcastle United and Juventus are set to compete for the signature of Kalvin Phillips, with the Magpies making the 27-year-old their primary target for the January transfer window.
Share:Eddie Howe, grappling with a severe injury crisis and the 10-month suspension of Sandro Tonali, deems the reinforcement of a defensive midfielder a paramount priority.
Phillips, currently with Manchester City, is viewed as a potential remedy to Howe’s challenges. Despite a subdued performance since his £45 million move from Leeds United last year, the 27-year-old is eager for more consistent playing time to enhance his chances of making Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the forthcoming European Championship.
The prospect of a move to St. James’ Park, be it permanent or on loan, appears mutually advantageous. However, Newcastle faces a formidable hurdle in Juventus, as the Italian giants also seek to fortify their defensive midfield.
Juventus are in need of a formidable presence in the middle of the park and the Massimiliano Allegri led side seem to be drawn to Kalvin Phillips, who is still believed to possess tremendous attitude despite his struggling time with City.
Both teams will need to offer Manchester City a reasonable amount to lure the English man out of the Etihad.
