Wahi had caught the football world’s attention with his stellar performances for Montpellier in the previous season, boasting an impressive tally of 19 league goals.
Reports circulating during the window suggested that Chelsea had made a move for the young Frenchman, tabling a verbal offer in the vicinity of £21 million. However, the deal failed to materialize, leaving fans wondering about the underlying factors.
According to a report from 90 Min, Wahi was not short of suitors. Several clubs expressed interest in securing his services, but the striker seemed determined to align himself with a project that resonated with his ambitions.
Speaking to L’equipe, Wahi shed light on his decision-making process, revealing that Chelsea’s offer did not resonate with his aspirations. The role they proposed failed to impress him.
“Chelsea, I didn’t want to go there just for the sake of it,” he added.Frankfurt was close — and more than Chelsea. They had to wait for Randal Kolo Muani’s departure and waiting for it was too complicated”
Chelsea had reportedly planned to sign Wahi and subsequently loan him to Strasbourg for the remainder of the season, a move intended to facilitate his development through consistent playing time.
In a surprising turn of events, Elye Wahi eventually inked a deal with Lens for a fee in the region of £30 million. This decision suggests that the young striker highly rates his prospects and believes that regular playing time is vital for his career at this stage.
