After securing a respectable draw against an in-form Augsburg side last Saturday, Hannes Wolf’s next assignment as Stuttgart manager is a trip to face Frankfurt at Commerzbank-Arena; a fixture that could very easily prove to be problematic. The newly promoted club have made a reasonable start to season – seven points from their opening six games is a decent return – but their problems on the road are clear, while Frankfurt are a side who’re tough to beat on their own patch.

As things stand after six games in the Bundesliga, Frankfurt also have seven points to their name. On that fact alone, it would be easy to assume that these two are closely matched; however, that’s not really the case. Fixture wise, Niko Kovac’s hosts have endured a much tougher start to the campaign, while they’ve also created a far better impression performance wise.

From a defensive point of view, Frankfurt are very tough to breach, they’re well organised, good at nullifying opposition attacks and, ultimately, give little away. During Kovac’s reign, this defensive solidity has come at a bit of a price as they’ve not been the best going forward, but such sturdy foundations allow Die Adler to pick up points even though they’re not the most forceful of attacking sides. That being said, despite scoring just four goals in six matches, Saturday’s hosts have looked much better in the final third; they’ve created more chances and seem to have more than enough firepower to improve on last season’s total rather slack total of 36 goals.

Against a Stuttgart side who’ve struggled to come to grips with life in the Bundesliga when playing away from the comforts of home, the hosts look a really good bet at 21/20. The visitors appear to be severally lacking in the forward areas, while their defensive play has left plenty to be desired too. Wolf’s men may have picked up a couple of decent results at home, but things haven’t yet gone to plan on their travels as they’ve picked up zero points from their three away games, scoring just one and conceding seven in the process. Results aren’t everything; it would be easier to see Stuttgart getting something from this match had they created a decent impression in defeat, but they’ve offered little, especially going forward, in their three away matches to date. Against both Hertha and Gladbach, the visitors failed to score and deservedly so, while, even though their match last time out came at home, they once again offered very little in the way of forward threat.

Unlike the visitors, Frankfurt, although their results aren’t the most appealing, have simply created a far better impression. Despite being primarily a defensive side, they’ve created far more going forward, while, as you would expect, they also look much, much stronger defensively. Clean sheets against both Gladbach and Koln bode well, as does their most recent home performance. Augsburg may have beaten Frankfurt by two goals to one in the last match at Commerzbank-Arena, but, on the balance of chances created, they were very fortunate to do so. On that occasion, Kovac’s men actually kept the visitors quiet for the majority of the contest, and a similar performance here should see them come out on top.

All things considered, whatever way you look at this fixture, it’s hard to feel that Frankfurt aren’t a touch overpriced at a shade of odds-against. The visitors, who’re hampered by injuries right now, simply don’t offer enough going forward. As a typically solid performance is expected from the hosts, punters are urged to back Kovac’s men to silence an already quiet visiting side.
