16:20 Wolverhampton – Poetic Force @ 10/3

Tony Carroll’s Poetic Force has been acquitting himself well of late and, as he meets just four rivals in this Class 5 event, looks to have been presented with another good opportunity to strike.

Having already notched up three career successes (two of which came over C&D), the three-year-old is proving to be quite the competitor at this level and has run with plenty of credit since moving to Tony Carroll at the end of 2016.

In two runs for his new trainer, Poetic Force has finished 3rd and 1st. First up, he was respectably placed in a Class 3 Nursery before building on that to win a Class 5 event over 10f at Lingfield last time out. Although he handled the step up in trip nicely last time out, the drop back to an extended mile here doesn’t look a problem, especially considering the manner in which he’s previously won over C&D.

The very inexperienced Enfolding has been installed as the 7/4 favourite in the early market, but he remains an unknown quantity. He’s clearly expected to step up on what was a reasonable effort in maiden company, but it’s fancied that he will need to find a fair bit more to beat a horse who could easily still be on the up in Poetic Force.

Carroll’s runner brings the best level of form into this contest and may yet have more to give while his previous wins at this track should hold him in good stead.

It wouldn’t be at all surprising to see this one go off a good bit shorter come the off and thus 10/3 looks a good price about a horse who’s shown a liking for this venue.

17:50 Wolverhampton – Athletic @ 7/2

The lucky last at Wolverhampton on Tuesday appears to be a competitive little event on the face of it, but there’s one who really stands out.

Off bottom weight, David Evans’ Athletic, who has been knocking on the door of late off what is an ever-falling mark, looks to have a great chance of finally returning to the winners enclosure.

Having previously won off a mark as high as 85 in a Class 3 event back in 2015, it’s possible that this eight-year-old’s best days are behind him; however, he ought to be up to winning a race such as this before long.

It has been several runs (22 to be exact) since this horse last got his head in front, but with every failure his mark continues to drop. Off what is now a lowly rating of 62, it’s hard to see him not resuming winning ways soon.

The gelding has returned in good spirits this winter for his new trainer, filling the runner-up spot on two occasions in contests that resemble this one. Over C&D last time out, he was clear of a field similar to this when losing to progressive sort and it’s fancied that a repeat of that run would make him hard to beat here.

At this level, Athletic really should be capable of winning again soon and, at odds of 7/2, it’s worth betting that this is the race that sees him cross the line ahead of the rest.
