League Two kicks off early this weekend as Accrington travel to take on Notts County at Meadow Lane on Friday night. As they currently sit inside the top seven, both teams will be hoping to continue what has been a relatively pleasing start to the new campaign.

The hosts, who lost 3-0 against Coventry on the opening day, have won each of their last three matches (all competitions) and are so far unbeaten at home. Similarly, Accrington have lost just one of their opening four league matches, winning each of the other three, while they also put in a valiant performance against Premier League West Brom in the League Cup on Tuesday night, despite ultimately coming off second best.

As far as goal-mouth action goes, it’s been a busy start to the season for both of these two teams. Having played five matches in all competitions, Notts County have so far scored 11 and conceded ten; they’ve kept just one clean sheet and have scored at least once in all five of their matches. Much of the same can be said about Accrington, who’ve scored 11 and conceded ten in their first five matches, keeping no clean sheets but also failing to score at no point.

As we can see from their respective records, goals have very much been the order of the day for each of these two teams so far this season and, in all honesty, it would be absolutely no surprise whatsoever if the net continued to be hit with regularity when they face each other on Friday night, such has been the nature of both their attacking and defensive play in recent weeks. At odds of 6/5 and 11/5 respectively, both ‘Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score’ and ‘Over 3.5 Goals’ stand out ahead of this fixture.

Between them, this pair have failed to score just once in ten combined matches so far, while their collective clean sheet total stands at just one. It’s fairly clear that neither have started sharply at the back, but both have certainly performed with credit going forward. What’s more, the manner in which Accrington have been playing so far this season should make this a fairly open encounter. John Coleman’s side like to get on the front foot and are certainly not shy in coming forward. Such a tactic often yields goals at the right end; however, it often means they’re left open at the back. Last week’s 3-2 defeat away at Yeovil was the perfect example.

Accrington aren’t the only ones who like to get forward; it’s fair to say that Notts County aren’t exactly the sort of team to adopt an overly cautious style, especially at home. They scored twice against Chesterfield in their only home game so far this season and created more than enough chances to add further goals. It’s easy to see Kevin Nolan’s men creating plenty against this open-looking Accrington team, however, if they defend anything like they did at the weekend, it’s hard to see them keeping a clean sheet. After all, they basically have the same rear-guard that conceded no less than 76 league goals last season. Interestingly, only one team in all of League Two saw ‘Over 3.5 Goals’ land more times at home than Notts County did last season.

All in all, there’s plenty of reason for both of these teams to back themselves going forward against below-par-looking defences and so the fans in attendance at Meadow Lane on Friday night could be in for a glut of goals.
