Tottenham target double swoop for defensive powerhouse duo to satisfy frustrated Antonio Conte
According to reports, Tottenham will target Inter Milan duo Denzel Dumfries and Stefan de Vrij in a last-ditch attempt to appease Antonio Conte. After Spurs were defeated 2-0 by Aston Villa on Sunday, the Italian warned that they lacked “really good” creative players.
Conte is known to be interested in making several signings during the January transfer window. Fabio Paratici, Inter’s director of football, could return to his former club to bolster the squad following a worrying dip in form.
Spurs may attempt to strengthen their defensive options this month with the signings of Dutch duo Dumfries and De Vrij. Between 2019 and 2021, the latter was an important cog in Conte’s Inter side, while Dumfries is well-known by Antonio Conte.
According to reports, Tottenham would be willing to offer around £39 million for the pair, but Inter, who are in desperate need of funds, will not accept that offer. Conte appears dissatisfied and wants reinforcements as soon as possible this month.
According to Inter Live, the Serie A club does not want to sell wing-back Dumfries or centre-back De Vrij because it would weaken their squad for the rest of the season.
Spurs’ 2-0 loss to Aston Villa exposed Conte’s team’s flaws. The north Londoners struggled defensively and lacked creativity in the final third, with Bryan Gil underwhelming on his full Premier League debut.
Conte later stated that his team lacks creative players who can run at opposing defenders. He revealed that he has expressed his concerns to the club’s board of directors.
“We have different characteristics,” he explained. We don’t have many players who can truly beat the man. Our team is lacking in creative players. Today was definitely difficult to find space in the first half.
“I want to be straightforward and honest. I’ve told the club about it, and I’ve expressed my thoughts. The fans deserve the best and only the best.
Perhaps staying in fifth place is the best option. Perhaps sixth, seventh, fifth, or fourth place is best.”
“In the first half, we played with a lot of energy. We didn’t concede anything, and we found a team that defended too deep, and then we conceded this goal, and my players’ confidence fell,” Conte added.
“We must understand that this is our life. Every game, we must fight for one or three points. This is true, especially when you are missing two or three key players and facing difficulties.”
